About me

This is the real secret of life — to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realise it is play. The only thing that is ultimately real about your journey is the step that you are taking at this moment. That’s all there ever is. I’m here to tell you that the path to peace is right there, when you want to get away. When you are present, you can allow the mind to be as it is without getting entangled in it. If you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life. That is very serious!

Veld fire in Tarlton

"There may be a great fire in our soul, net no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke."
- Vincent van Gogh

A daily practice of sketching and painting gives you a chance to exercise the big three P's - practice, practice, practice!

Veldfire in Tarlton in October 2009 - watercolour in Moleskine Watercolour sketch-book Maree©

This was another veld fire in our area, very late for the season - we stopped on the side of the road and this time I had my watercolour pencils with me! Did some quick preliminary colour and finished it off at home. The sunset was actually stunning behind all the smoke - should have stayed longer and gotten more detail on the clouds ... ah well, next time!

  1. You've certainly caught that beautiful glow behind the fire which in itself, is sooo intense! Lovely Maree.

  2. Thank you Liz! I've been fascinated with the veld fires this year, they're so beautiful yet so deadly...

  3. These scary fires, your sketch gave the sense of the great power of fires to destroy. At the same time you are documenting the daily life of the Magalies landscape. Our red and orange flags are often up nowadays and we really fear a veld fire. There are so many small animals living in the fynbos!

  4. It's funny how the fires carried on till so late this year, Marie. I watched as the Crowned Plover ran around frantically as the fire on our property destroyed her nest. Luckily she only had eggs, but the tortoises and hedgehogs don't stand a chance.
