About me

This is the real secret of life — to be completely engaged with what you are doing in the here and now. And instead of calling it work, realise it is play. The only thing that is ultimately real about your journey is the step that you are taking at this moment. That’s all there ever is. I’m here to tell you that the path to peace is right there, when you want to get away. When you are present, you can allow the mind to be as it is without getting entangled in it. If you miss the present moment, you miss your appointment with life. That is very serious!

Spring returning

It is not so much for its beauty that the forest makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air that emanates from old trees, that so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.
- Robert Louis Stevenson

A daily practice of sketching and painting gives you a chance to exercise the big three P's - practice, practice, practice!

Watercolour in Moleskine 200gsm Watercolour Sketch-book - 8" x 5"

Some blue gum trees (Eucalyptus) at the bottom of our smallholding (Gauteng, South Africa) - everything is already turning green, but some trees are still showing signs of the veld fires that raged through here just a couple of days ago. These trees provide me with endless hours of sketching pleasure - together, in pairs, singly - and each tree looks different when seen from its other side.

  1. What lovely trees, Maree. So sorry about the fire.
We live in fear of these, here, in middle Texas, because of the drought.

Have you read the very touching THE FAITHFUL GARDINER by Clarissa Pinkola Estes? about renewal after a fire:

"What is this faithful process of spirit and seed that touches empty ground and makes it rich, again? Its greater workings I cannot claim to understand. I only know that in its care, what has seemed dead is dead no longer..."

  2. Thanks so much for your lovely comment Annie! Yes, some of the fires are absolutely necessary for our ecosystem, some of our Aloes here in Gauteng won't flower until they've been burnt by the fire. And the wonderful new life appearing thereafter is magnificent! I certainly must look for "The faithful Gardiner", sounds like a great read!

  4. Ah, glad you like them Pam! Now I'm pleased you like the blog design, wasn't sure about it and almost went back to the old one, except it would mean doing all the gadgets in the side columns over again! lol!
